Serbian anti-regime forces gather in Athens

London, Athens, Thursday - Forces opposed to the regime of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic will mass in Athens this weekend. Representatives of the Serbian opposition will join Kosovo Serbs, the Crown Council, G17 Plus and Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic in discussions with Crown Prince Aleksandar Karadjorjevic and representatives of the Serbian Diaspora.

A statement from Prince Aleksandar's office in London today predicted that the Athens conference would open a broad dialogue and confirm the vision of a new democratic Serbia. The crown prince will formally open the conference tomorrow.

Senior sources in the Greek Foreign Ministry today denied any involvement of the Greek government in the conference. An unnamed Greek official said that Foreign Minister Jorgos Papandreu had not been invited to the gathering and would not meet the participants. However Athens media say today that the possibility of Papandreu speaking to some of the Serb delegates could not be excluded.
