US SCEPTICAL ABOUT THE INVITATION TO OESCE
AFP reports that US officials have stated today that they are
sceptical about the invitation extended by the President of
Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic to the OESCE. Milosevic has invited
the OESCE to send a delegation to Serbia to discuss the results of
the recent elections there. Spokesman of the State Department,
Nicholas Burns said that USA ``will continue to put pressure on
Milosevic.'' However, he added that US will also ``consider that
proposal.''
EU DECLARATION ON SITUATION IN SERBIA
Participants in the European Community summit in Dublin adopted
today an official declaration on the situation in Serbia. The EU
declaration calls on ``all parties involved in the current
conflict to practice restraint, avoid violence and start a
dialogue,'' reports AFP.
The declaration notes that EU has received the invitation sent by
Serbian authorities calling for an OESCE delegation to come to
Serbia and discuss the results of the municipal elections held in
November.
OESCE CANNOT VERIFY THE RESULTS
Although official Belgrade has invited an OESCE delegation to come
to Serbia for talks on the disputed municipal elections, OESCE
officials say that the very nature of that invitation leaves no
possibility for the checking of election results, reports Reuters.
OESCE officials also said that their delegation would first meet
with all the parties involved in the dispute and only then propose
a solution for the crisis. In this case, the only solution might
be the holding of new elections, under OESCE supervision.
FRANCE IN FAVOR OF DIALOGUE
News agency Montena-fax reports that in his recent interview to
the newspaper ``Pobjeda,'' the French ambassador to Belgrade,
Stanislas Filliole states that ``France wants the will of the
people to be respected and wants the opposition and the
authorities in Serbia to start a dialogue.''
``Otherwise, precious time would be lost and FR Yugoslavia's entry
into Europe will be delayed,'' concluded the French ambassador.
GREEK PRESS ON THE PROTESTS IN SERBIA
Today's Greek press carries reports that the demonstrations in
Serbia are easing off as both the authorities and the opposition
seem to be heading towards a compromise. Greek newspapers also
report that some talks have already taken place through the
intercession of the Italian Foreign Minister, Lamberto Dini, who
is said to have acted as an intermediary.
