DRASKOVIC: OUR GOAL IS TO TOPPLE MILOSEVIC
In his protest speech today given in front of about one hundred
thousand people, Vuk Draskovic, leader of Serbian Renewal
Movement, said:
``There is no other aim but this: the resignation of the chief of
state-terrorism. No Supreme Court annulled the election results.
He [Milosevic] is the editor-in-chief of all state media, he is
the head of police, he is the Supreme Judge, and he is now
terrorizing the whole country. Romanians felt the same while under
Ceausescu.'' Draskovic finished his speech by saying: ``Now I will
say his name, and you tell me what you think about him.'' the
demonstrators responded with ten minutes of booing.
VESNA PESIC: DO YOU APPROVE THEFT?
The leader of the Civic Alliance Of Serbia, Vesna Pesic addressed
people by asking if the heads of the army, of the Ministries and
of police approve the theft that has been committed. She finished
her speech saying, ``We, all together, simply must win against
this dictatorship.''
DJINDJIC: I WALK, THEREFORE I EXIST
Leader of Democratic Party, Zoran Djindjic addressed protesters
today and greeted the refugees present at the rally by saying that
Zajedno will never forget about them. He quoted one of the banners
on today's protest which said ``I Walk, Therefore I Think'' and
concluded: ``I'd rather say 'I Walk, therefore I Exist', because
Serbia lives today only on its streets. We have to be strong, we
have to endure.''
FIFTEENTH DAY OF STUDENT PROTESTS
At today's student protest, many actors and University professors
attended the rally as a sign of their support and also addressed
the demonstrators in person.
About a hundred students from the city of Kragujevac also joined
today's protest in Belgrade. More than 1,500 professors have now
signed the petition in support of student demands.
Protest of some 10,000 ended, as usual, by walking through the
streets of downtown Belgrade. The students were also greeted by
the members of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The next protest
gathering is scheduled for tomorrow noon.
CLASSES STOP AT ``BRACA KARIC'' UNIVERSITY
``A delegation of the students of 'Braca Karic University' visited
us today and said that they will stop attending their classes from
tomorrow on,'' said Dusan Vasiljevic, spokesman of the Steering
Board of the Student Protest '96.
Vasiljevic refereed to today's protest as ``the calm before the
storm'' and announced further initiatives among the staff of the
university who are organizing themselves in support of the
protesters.
PROTESTS OF ZAJEDNO IN NIS
Today's protest in Nis attracted more people then on any of the
previous days. The citizens of Nis were especially outraged when
they heard that the Supreme Court of Serbia has refused to accept
the complaints submitted by Zajedno. As in other cities, each
mention of the name of Serbia President Slobodan Milosevic caused
several minutes of booing. Vice President of the Serbian Renewal
Movement, Milan Komnenic said that ``the judges have been making
their rulings according to the will and arrogance of one man and
his wife.''
High above protesters' heads was a cardboard TV set with the
slogan: ``Switch Off Your TV And Open Your Eyes.''
KRAGUJEVAC
After the victory of Zajedno in the city of Kragujevac was
officially accepted today, leaders of Zajedno announced the
continuation of protests as a sign of support for the protests in
Belgrade and other cities.
JAGODINA
About 3,000 people demonstrated today in the city of Jagodina.
They were addressed by local leaders of Zajedno coalition and then
went for a usual walk-about down the city's main streets.
