SERBIAN ORTHODOX PATRIARCH PAVLE READS EASTER SERVICE
Serbian Orthodox churches throughout the world on Sunday
25 celebrated Easter. Patriarch Pavle sent Easter greetings to the
citizens of Serbia and followers of the Orthodox faith. Patriarch
Pavle told the congregation that the church would pray for Serbs
not to be led into temptation and that whereever they lived that
the sun of freedom would shine down on them. He called for the
30 return of all refugees and displaced persons and said that they
should live out there lives in peace and prosperity.
VESNA PESIC TO SUE POLICE LIEUTENANT COLONEL
Leader of the Civic Alliance of Serbia (GSS) Vesna Pesic has
brought legal charges against police Lieutenant Colonel Slobodan
35 Maksimovic at Belgrade's First Municipal Court. According to a
statement issued by the GSS on Sunday, Mr. Maksimovic led special
police forces during the Brankov Bridge clashes between peaceful
demonstrators and the police on the night of February 2nd/3rd. Ms.
Pesic was among those injured in the clashes, BETA reported on
40 Sunday.
RUSSIA BACKS GOVERNMENT -- OPPOSITION DIALOGUE IN SERBIA
Leader of the opposition Serbian Renewal Movement Vuk Draskovic
told reporters, on returning from Russia Sunday, that
representatives of the Russian Government had expressed their
45 ``full and unconditional support'' for the establishement of a
democratic dialogue between the government and opposition in
Serbia.
Mr. Draskovic said that he had ``thanked the Russian Government
for supporting the return of Serbia as a fully-fledged member to
50 the international community,'' and insisted that ``democratic
Serbia and Serbian people should not be penalised because of the
destructive politics of one man,'' BETA reported.
DETAINED WORKERS FREED
Serbian trade union 'Nezavisnost' told Beta on Sunday that two of
55 the eight detained workers from the cement factory in Novi Popovac
had been set free on Saturday. 'Nezavisnost' stated it was unclear
why the remaining six had still not been released and that they
had appealed the court verdict sentencing them to one month
imprisonment.
60 The two freed workers said all eight detainees had gone on hunger
strike last Wednesday in protest at what they called their unfair
arrest. The remaining six are continuing their hunger protest.
CROATIAN AUTHORITES HAD WAR CRIMES EVIDENCE ON STOJICIC
Croatian daily 'Vjesnik' reported on Sunday that Croatian
65 auhorities had been in the process of gathering war crimes
evidence against the late Serbian Deputy Interior Minister Radovan
Stojicic at the time of his murder. The daily reports that the
Croatian State Prosecution was to be presented with an extensive
file containing documents on Mr. Stojicic.
70 FEDERAL AUTHORITIES OWE MONTENEGRIN PENSIONERS 215 MILLION DINARS
The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia owes Montenegrin pensioners
upwards of 215 million dinars, Montena Fax reported on Sunday. Of
that amount, 194.6 millions are overdue payments from the 1996 tax
year.
75 CROATIANS DEMAND DEPARTURE OF EXTREMIST SERBS
Croatian Democratic Union candidate for the Mayor of Ilok (Eastern
Salvonia) Stipan Kraljevic told Croatian daily 'Vecernji List' on
Sunday that a Croat controlled city government would be
established within 30 days, but stressed that ``first all
80 extremist Serbs must leave the region.''
