RECTORY LOCKED, TEACHING COUNCIL IN SCHOOL OF PHILOSOPHY
Deans and Institute managers from the University of Belgrade who
came to the session of the Teaching Council planned for Thursday
found the Rectory's door locked. A patrol car was in front of the
Rectory building and some professors claimed that there were also
some policemen in plain clothes inside the Rectory. Deans decided
to hold their session in the School of Philosophy. Students from
the University of Belgrade gathered in front of the School of
Philosophy on Thursday, and they plan to walk to the Ministry of
Education's offices. There they will hand in legal charges against
a professor from the School of Geography, Mira Markovic (Head of
Yugoslav Left and wife of Serbian President, Slobodan Milosevic,)
because she does not fulfill her obligations at the University.
ZAJEDNO LEADERS IN LONDON: UK SHOULD SUPPORT OPPOSITION'S CITIES
The President of the Serbian Renewal Movement and one of the
Zajedno coalition leaders, Vuk Draskovic, said that the Zajedno
leaders, in their talks with British politicians, were seeking not
only verbal and diplomatic, but also material support for the
constituencies in which the Zajedno won in the elections, says
Radio BBC's news service in Serbian. Mr. Draskovic said he feared
that the Serbian government would impose ``internal economic
sanctions'' on the cities where the opposition had won, and thus
try to discredit local authorities in the year of the
parliamentary and presidential elections. On internal relations
within the Zajedno, Mr. Draskovic said: ``Even if we did not want
to be together, we would have to be together.'' Vesna Pesic said
that Zajedno represented the real interests of Serbia and its
people. ``Those interests lie in quick steps towards the
democratization of Serbia and the start of social and economic
reforms'' she said. She denied that new local opposition
authorities are indulging in revenge politics. ``When someone
steals something, and goes to jail for that, or when someone
illegally earned money and is brought before a court of law for
that, then it is not revenge,'' said Mrs. Pesic.
EUROPEAN COMMISSION CALLS EU TO HELP YUGOSLAVIA
A delegation from the European Parliament which recently visited
Belgrade has called on the European Union (EU) to help Yugoslavia
to overcome the crisis, FoNet reports. One of the delegate, Hanes
Svoboda, said that the delegation has drafted a programme of aid
and a proposal that the EU demands equal treatment for politicians
on all sides in Yugoslavia.
ZAJEDNO SUGGESTS RETURN OF CROWN PRINCE
The Zajedno coalition leaders visited Yugoslav crown prince
Aleksandar Karadjordjevic in London on Wednesday, and invited him
to visit Serbia, FoNet reports. The President of the Serbian
Renewal Movement, Vuk Draskovic, said that the prince should
return to his throne in Serbia and that Serbia should be a
monarchy. The Crown Prince would play the same role as Juan Carlos
in Spain, and make the transformation from a dictatorship into a
democracy easier, claimed Draskovic. ``Serbia needs its Juan
Carlos, and he lives in this city [London]. It is a national
disgrace that he still has the status of a refugee, he has not got
Serbian citizenship and his private property is in the hands of
communist rulers,'' said Mr. Draskovic. He went on to say that
``Serbian people will decide on what kind of the state they want
to live in: monarchy or republic.'' Crown Prince Aleksandar
Karadjordjevic said that he had talked to the Zajedno leaders
about the need for Western help for the Serbian people, who had
undergone economic troubles, and also about democracy, human
rights and freedom of the media in Serbia.
SESELJ: ZAJEDNO WILL NOT ABOLISH CITY TAX
The Leader of the Serbian Radical Party, Vojislav Seselj, on
Thursday accused the Zajedno coalition of having no intention to
abolish the city tax of 3 per cent, although they pledged to do so
during their election campaign, Beta reports. He also said that
the City Council had no legal right to appoint the Managing Board
of Studio B television was and that members of his party would not
participate in any illegal acts carried out by the Council.
Speaking about relations between Serbia and Montenegro, Mr. Seselj
said that Americans ``meddled in'' them and that ``some
Montenegrin politicians are working towards the separation of
Montenegro. One part of the Montenegrin government opposes that,
so divisions among the authorities are very probable,'' Beta
reports.
YUGOSLAVIA ON LIST OF COUNTRIES WITH MISSING PERSONS
The manager of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, Vojin
Dimitrijevic, stated that the mysterious disappearance of
passengers from the train going from Belgrade to Bar in 1993 was
an enormous scandal, especially because the mystery was still
officially unsolved. That fact meant that Yugoslavia was included
in the group of countries where there are severe breaches of human
rights, including mysterious disappearances of citizens. No one
knows anything about the fate of those people, not even the
location of their graves, said Mr. Dimitrijevic. It is now four
years since the mysterious kidnapping of 19 Yugoslav citizens from
the Belgrade-Bar train, at the station of Strpci.
