EUROPEAN UNION MISSION TO MONITOR IMPLEMENTATION OF LOCAL
ELECTIONS RESULTS IN SERBIA
The European Union (EU) is considering the possibility of sending
a mission to Belgrade to monitor the hand-over of local power by
the Socialist government to the Serbian opposition in those
constituencies where the Zajedno coalition won local elections
last November, FoNet reported on Monday.
The EU are also expected to monitor the declared commitment of
both the government and the opposition to open dialogue, freeing
the media and democratic reform.
European Foreign Ministers also discussed the necessity of the
``broad autonomy of Kosovo, within Yugoslav borders'' in Mondays
white paper. The European Council said that this was the main
condition for future co-operation with the FR Yugoslavia.
VICE CHANCELLOR TO CONVENE TEACHING COUNCIL
On Monday the Council of Deans of the University of Belgrade
requested that Belgrade Universitys Senior Vice-Chancellor convene
a session of the Teaching Council this Wednesday. Under normal
circumstances the University Chancellor is supposed to convene
such sessions. The Council have requested that the senior Vice
Chancellor assume responsibility for calling the session in a show
of solidarity for the student protest.
MILOSEVIC MEETS KRAJISNIK
On Monday Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic held talks in
Belgrade with Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Momcilo Krajisnik. The discussions focused on the
mutual interests of the two states and the improvement of
relations according to the Dayton agreement.
EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT DELEGATION IN KOSOVO
Member of European Parliament Dorris Puck, was in Kosovo on Monday
as head of an international delagation to the FR Yugoslavia. The
delegation visited the family of Besnik Restelica, a Kosovar
Albanian who died in prison last week.
MEP Puck commented that it was astonishing that medieval torture
was possibe in twentieth century Kosovo, adding that the situation
in Kosovo had not improved since 1989.
The delegation held talks with the representatives of Kosovar
Albanians and Serbian authorities in Pristina, BETA reported on
Monday
MILOSEVIC SIGNS OWEN'S AUTHORITY FOR ARBITRATION
On Monday member of the Arbitration Commission for the city of
Brcko from 'Republika Srpska' Vitomir Popovic confirmed that
Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic had authorized Roberts Owen,
chief arbiter for Brcko, to decide the fate of the disputed
Bosnian town alone in the event that his fellow arbiters
disagreed, Beta reported.
Mr. Popovic said that the same authorization was also given by
Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic. Mr. Popovic added that
'Republika Srpska', according to the Dayton agreement, had the
right to 0.5% more territory than it had at present, about 250
km2.
