FIVE HUNDRED WORKERS DEMAND RELEASE OF GAOLED UNIONISTS
About 500 workers at the Popovac cement works near Paracin
protested on Wednesday in front of the Police Department in the
town, demanding the release of their fellow-workers who were
25 arrested on Tuesday night and an explanation as to why they had
been imprisoned. Police blocked the entrance to the building,
leaving the protesters with no explanation. Radio B92 learned from
Radio Jagodina that the arrested workers were in the Jagodina
penitentiary. The Paracin police arrested the eight workers on
30 Tuesday evening after they had announced they would, together with
other workers, block the Nis-Belgrade motorway near Paracin in
protest at the Serbian Government's introduction of enforced
management in their factory. Radio B92 learned on Wednesdsay that
the Tuesday police intervention came after a clash among the
35 workers themselves and that those arrested had been charged with
misdemeanours. The cement works went on strike on Tuesday because
of the attempt by the Serbian Government to introduce enforced
management.
KOSOVO SERB RESISTANCE IN WEST
40 Momcilo Trajkovic, leader of the Serb Resistance Movement in
Kosovo (SPOK) and a member of the Kosovo Serb delegation to the
talks on Kosovo, said on Wednesday that the delegation of Kosovo
Serbs had not gone to Western Europe to seek a solution for
Kosovo, but to present its views on the Kosovo issue.
45 At a news conference in Pristina, Mr Trajkovic saidthat the
delegation had meet with representatives of the parliamentary
parties of Great Britain, Belgium and Germany and Prince
Aleksandar Karadjordjevic.
RUGOVA TO CALL ELECTIONS IN MAY
50 Ibrahim Rugova, leader of the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo, has
decided to call parallel Albanian parliamentary and presidential
elections in May, according to the Wednesday issue of the
Belgrade's Dnevni Telegraf. According to the daily, Mr Rugova's
decision will be made public by Apil 25 at the latest, and the
55 elections will most probably be held on May 24 or 25, 5 years to a
day since the first separate Albanian elections in Kosovo.
BELGRADE EMERGENCY TO STRIKE
The Independent Trade Union of the emergency medical unit in
Belgrade announced they whould go on strike on April 26th if their
60 demands were not met. These include the payment of overdue wages
and the provisions of protective equipment.
DUAL CITIZENSHIP FOR CROATS IN HUNGARY
Finishing his two-day official visit to Budapest, Croatian
President Franjo Tudjman announced on Wednesday that the Croat
65 minority in Hungary would soon be granted dual citizenship. This
will mean that the 90,000 ethnic Croats in southern Hungary will
become Croatian as well as Hungarian citizens.
A car belonging to President Tudjman's party in Hungary was stolen
during his stay in Budapest. Hungarian radio, quoting no sources,
70 reported that the thieves were most probably members of the Serb
mafia.
SFOR COLONEL SHOT
An Italian colonel in the Stabilization Forces (SFOR) in Mostar
was found dead on Wednesday morning. A spokesman for SFOR told
75 media that the officer had had been killed by a shot from his own
gun and that this appeared to be a case of suicide.
