EASTERN SLAVONIA RESULTS STILL NOT OFFICIAL
Official results have still not been released for last weekend's
elections in Eastern Slavonia. Croatian state media report that
25 the ruling HDZ party has won in the Vukovar City Council. This
leaves the Independent Democratic Serb Party with control over
nine of the enclave's twenty-seven municipalities. The Serb bloc
had earlier claimed vitory in eleven electorates.
The president of the Independent Democratic Serb Party, Vojislav
30 Stanimirovic, will hold a news conference in Belgrade on Saturday.
WAR ON BLACK ECONOMY DECLARED
The Yugoslav Minister for Internal Trade, Milorad Mirkovic, said
on Friday that the authorities would use all means of fighting the
black economy, including customs officers, various inspections,
35 police and even the army if necessary. ``This is the only way to
reduce the black market to a normal level of about 10% of overall
economic exchange from its present level of 40%,'' said Mr.
Mirkovic.
KLEIN IN BELGRADE ON MONDAY
40 The head of the UN Transitional Administration for Eastern
Slavonia, Jacques Klein, on Monday, April 21, will meet Serbian
President Slobodan Milosevic, in Belgrade. After the meeting, Mr.
Klein will hold a news conference in the UN Office in Belgrade.
MILOSEVIC MEETS INTERNATIONAL BUSINESSMEN
45 The Serbian President, Slobodan Milosevic, on Friday spoke to
participants in an international business convention organized by
the Yugoslav Chamber of Commerce. During the talks, Mr. Milosevic
stressed that Yugoslavia was open for international economic
cooperation, and that this would be to Yugoslavia's advantage. He
50 advocated the overcoming of the present trading restrictions and
the stimulation of customs and other economic concessions which
could improve trading and integration processes.
MIRA MARKOVIC CALLS FOR MORAL APPROACH
A serious alliance of the left must be established in Serbia,
55 according to Mirjana Markovic, wife of Serbian president Slobodan
Milosevic. Ms Markovic, who is also president of the executive of
the Yugoslav United Left, said on Friday that the alliance should
promote the patriotic and moral interests of the country and its
municipalities. The President's wife stressed that this was
60 necessary because a section of the right wing, as a fifth column,
was trying to destroy Yugoslavia.
SPO TO DECIDE ON DRASKOVIC CANDIDACY
The Central Committee of the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) on
Saturday will decide on the presidential candidacy of the party
65 leader Vuk Draskovic. This was confirmed by senior SPO official
Spasoje Krunic on Friday. Besides the candidacy of Mr Draskovic,
the committee will also discuss preparations for the party's
convention. The meeting will be held behind closed doors.
SOLANA IN SARAJEVO
70 NATO General Secretary Javier Solana arrived in Sarajevo on
Friday, FoNet reports. Mr. Solana is visiting BiH at a time when
some military officials of the NATO troops in Bosnia are wondering
aloud whether the Alliance can withdraw from Bosnia without the
risk of a new war.
