KRAGUJEVAC STUDENTS PROTEST
Students of the University of Kragujevac have continued their
protest rallies in the centre of the city, demanding complete
recognition of all local election results. On Saturday, the crowd
was addressed by the prominent playwright Dusan Kovacevic, who
called on students not to repeat the mistakes of their colleagues
from 1968 and 1991. ``You must not accept being servants of the
system in a third world country. That system gave birth to Tito
and Milosevic and brought us down to the level of African
countries,'' Mr Kovacevic told the students.
DEMOCRACY ESSENTIAL
Spanish newspaper ``El Pais'' in its Sunday issue commented that
there was now a chance for Serbia to progress towards democracy
and pluralism. Serbian President, Slobodan Milosevic, despite his
dictatorial methods, had had to give in and recognize the victory
of the opposition in many cities. ``This was thanks to the massive
street protests of hundreds of thousands of citizens,'' said the
Spanish daily, adding that the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and former Spanish Prime Minister,
Felipe Gonzalez should be given significant credit for the
recognition of electoral results in Serbia. ``The OSCE report also
recommended negotiations between the government and the
opposition, but it seems that Milosevic is not ready for that,''
the paper added.
BUSES OUT
The Trade Union of Public Transport Bus Drivers in Belgrade
announced that drivers will go on strike on Monday, February 17,
as an act of protest against delays in salary payments. If overdue
salaries are not paid on Monday, the strike will continue.
MUSLIMS: NO REVENGE
The President of the Muslim National Council of Sandzak (MNVS),
Sulejman Ugljanin, has said that his party will not be seek
revenge on anyone, although it had won local elections in the
Serbian province of Sandzak. ``Rather than revenge, we are working
on the creation of stability and solving the status of Bosnians in
Yugoslavia, as guaranteed by the Yugoslav constitution,'' said Mr.
Ugljanin.
