ZAJEDNO STAYS TOGETHER
Leaders of the opposition Zajedno coalition, after an emergency
meeting of the Presidential Council on Monday, told reporters that
25 the coalition would stay together and stick by all agreements
reached within the coalition, Radio B92 reported.
The leaders of the beleagured coalition stressed that any
digression from such agreements would put an end to the coalition.
Vuk Draskovic warned that any leader who endangered the coalition
30 will have to answer to the public and party members. Vesna Pesic
said that all future disputes within the coalition should be dealt
with through the Presidential Council of the coalition, and not
via media.
Zajedno also stressed that the coalition would only participate in
35 the forthcoming elections if conditions were free and fair.
Zoran Djindjic said that Zajedno should seek support from all pro-
democracy forces in Serbia.
Zajedno also pledged to call for new demonstrations should the
government fail to meet Zajedno's demands for democratic reform
40 Vuk Draskovic said that the coalition had survived a crisis of
mistrust by removing the causes of that mistrust.
Zoran Djindjic said that Zajedno remained the strongest democratic
force in Serbia. He added that the first priority of Zajedno was
unity and the second was to win at the forthcoming elections.
45 DJUKANOVIC DIGS HEELS IN
The fight between warring factions in Montenegro's Socialist Party
(DPS) continues in spite of a session of the party's main board on
Monday.
The meeting was attended by both President Momir Bulatovic (head
50 of one faction) and Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic (his opponent).
Independent news agency Montena Fax reported that Mr. Djukanovic
had refused to compromise and insisted that ``there could be no
compromise about Montenegro's best interests.''
The Executive Board of the DPS is to meet on Tuesday and Prime
55 Minister Djukanovic is to go to Greece on Wednesday.
FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA SIGNS AGREEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING
WITH OSCE
Representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation
in Europe (OSCE) and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia signed an
60 Agreement of Understanding on Monday.
Among other things, the Agreement obliges Yugoslavia to respect
the OSCE mandate to oversee local elections in Bosnia and
Herzegovina this September, BETA reported.
UNOFFICIAL RESULTS OF CROATIAN ELECTIONS
65 First reports on the results of this weekend's elections in
Croatia put the governing Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) in the
lead with a majority of votes in 19 of 21 municipalities, BETA
reported.
In line with these results the HDZ will have 41 members in a 63
70 member parliament. Croatian President Franjo Tudjman also has the
authority to appoint another five MPs -- three Croats and two
Serbs.
The remaining seats in parliament were won by the coalition of the
Croatian Social Liberal Party and Croatian Rural Party, and the
75 coalition of the Social Democratic Party and the People's Party,
with the Istrian Democratic Union, BETA reported.
In the polls for Zagreb's City Assembly, by mid-afternoon the HDZ
appeared to have won 34,9% of votes, Social Democrats 23.9%,
Croatian Social Liberal Party 10.5%. This would give the HDZ 24
80 assembly seats, SDP 14, HSLS 9 and Croatian Rural Party 3 seats.
SWISS WAR CRIME TRIAL OF ETHNIC SERB
The Court Martial of Switzerland launched a trial against Goran G.
for war crimes allegedly committed in the Muslim Omarska detention
camp, Bosnia and Herzegovina, FoNet reported on Monday.
85 This is the first trial of its kind ever to be held in
Switzerland. Goran G. is accused of bruatally beating six
prisoners, including a woman and a child. Mr Goran G. lawyer said
that he hoped his client would be released by Friday, becaues of
the lack of evidence.
90 DJINDJIC IN MOSCOW ON APRIL 21
Mayor of Belgrade Zoran Djindjic is to visit Moscow from April 21
to 23 at the invitation of Most Media Group General Manager
Vladimir Gisinski, Russian newsagency Itar Tass reported on
Monday.
95 The Media Group owns NTV television, Radio Moscow Echo, 'Sevodna'
daily and 'Itogi' weekly.
