TOMIC SETS DATE FOR CONSTITUTION OF BELGRADE CITY ASSEMBLY
On Friday Serbian Parliamentary Speaker Dragan Tomic announced the
constitution of Belgrade's City Assembly for February 21 at 10
a.m. Other local city assemblies will be constituted after local
electoral commissions verify seats in those towns.
STUDENT PROTEST MARCH
On Friday thousands of Belgrade students marched through central
Belgrade for the 84th successive day. 500 students then marched
towards the Belgrade residence of Serbian President Slobodan
Milosevic. However the students were prevented from entering the
exclusive Belgrade street by riot police.
DEMOCRATIC PARTY NEWS CONFERENCE
Spokesman of the Democratic Party Slobodan Vuksanovic told
reporters on Friday that his party had demanded the resignation of
Serbian Parliamentary Speaker Dragan Tomic. Mr. Vuksanovic added
that relations between the two opposition leaders -- Zoran
Djindjic and Vuk Draskovic -- were ``very good'' and added that
street protests would continue until the Zajedno coalition
obtained their electoral wins in full.
SHATTUCK'S VISIT TO BELGRADE DEPENDS ON IMPLEMENTATION OF 'LEX
SPECIALIS'
On Thursday night the US State Department told Serbian President
Slobodan Milosevic that US Deputy Secretary of State John
Kornbloom would not visit Belgrade on his current tour of the
Balkans. The statement explained that Mr. Milosevic was still
suject to diplomatic isolation following the recent election
crisis.
The US State Department added that Deputy Secretary of State for
Human Rights John Shattuck would not visit Belgrade until the
Serbian opposition had established power in the 14 Serbian towns
it won in elections last November.
In a second message to the Serbian President state department
spokesman Nicholas Burns said that the decision of Serbian
authorities to deny visas to US congressmen did not help the
already difficult diploamtic relations between the two states.
