EDUCATION MINISTER ON UNVERSITY TEACHNING
Serbian Education Minister Jovo Todorovic told the state-
controlled TV station 'Politika' on Sunday that the Government
would take appropriate measures if University teaching was not
resumed on Monday and that those faculties which failed to comply
would be denied funding. He said that the lost classes would be
made up for during the summer if teaching was resumed on March 10
or a day or two later, and in this way the school year would not
be lost.
STUDENTS: A DAY LONGER
Student spokesman Dusan Popovic told students who gathered for
Sunday's protest march that the students would gather at the
plateau in front of the School of Philosphy at 14:00 hours on
Monday, after meeting in their faculties, to show that ``We
persevered for a day longer.'' The students will go to the
Ministry of Education and show the Educaton Minister that they
would not bow to any threat. The Student Protest leaders were
insistent that it is the students who decide when to begin and end
their protests.
DZADZUC TO INTRODUCE PUNISHMENTS FOR DISSATISFIED JOURNALISTS
General Manager of the Belgrade weekly 'NIN', Tomislav Dzadzic,
announced on Sunday that he would take legal action against those
of the weekly's journalists who ``have done 'NIN' the greatest
damage and done their best to destabilize it.'' The majority of
the weekly's editorial staff have announced they will go on strike
on Monday, in protest against the sacking of the editor-in-chief,
Dusan Velickovic. General Manager Dzadzic said that the strike was
not legal, that those in favour of it were not the majority and
that the decision to replace the Editor in Chief's was perfectly
legal, according to Beta. The Strike Board of the weekly's
journalists said that General Manager's threats of sackings had
not discouraged them.
BOGOLJUB KARIC: I HAVE NEVER SAID I WOULD RUN FOR PRESIDENT,
NEITER HAVE I SAID I WOULD NOT
In an interview with the Belgrade independent weekly 'Vreme',
Bogoljub Karic, one of the wealthiest Serbian businessmen, was
asked whether he would run for the forthcoming presidential
elections in Serbia. He replied: ``The next president must make
Serbia one of the acknowledged and respected European countries
and lead the country into the modern age of respect for the
integrity of every single one of its citizens. Simply, those in
power must be responsible and replacable, the citizens must be
protected and must respect their duties... There must be no one
[in power] who is greater and more important than Serbia itself. I
do not know who can accomplish this as president, but I will
support anyone who can guarantee the things that I have just
listed... I have never said that I will run for president, neither
have I said I will not.''
