    STUDENTS JEER LEADERS

At the 105th protest on Thursday students jeered their leaders and
labelled the decision to return temporarily to lectures on Friday
``treason.'' The decision was taken to force University Chancellor
Dragutin Velickovic to resign. Mr. Velickovic had earlier promised
to hand in his resignation when students returned to classes.

Member of the Student Protest management Dusan Popovic tried to
reassure students and stressed that the protest would continue
until Velickovic resigned, BETA reported on Thursday.

SERBIAN PRESIDENT HOLDS TALKS ON ECONOMIC COOPERATION WITH
    REPUBLIKA SRSPSKA

Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic met representatives of the
Serb Republic (RS) on Thursday to discuss economic cooperation
between the RS and the FR Yugoslavia.

RS Prime Minister Gojko Klickovic told reporters after the meeting
that the talks represented a continuation of earlier agreements to
facilitate the free movement of goods and persons between the FR
    Yugoslavia and the RS.

Mr. Klickovic stressed that the talks had focused exclusively on
economic cooperation and not the Agreement on Special Relations
between FR Yugoslavia and the RS.

Asked why RS President Biljana Plavsic had not signed the
Agreement on Special Relations, Mr. Klickovic said that Ms.
Plavsic was in principle in favour of the Agreement, and that it
had only been a matter of who would sign the document, BETA
    reported on Thursday.

SESELJ: US ENCOURAGE UPRISING OF ALBANIAN SEPARATISTS

Vojislav Seselj, leader of the Serbian Radical Party stated on
Thursday that ``recent terrorist attacks in Kosovo are an
expression of the weakness of Albanian separatists.'' He demanded
that the Serbian Government suppress ``all attempts to jeopardize
Serbian territorial integrity'' in Kosovo. Mr. Seselj concluded
that ``the US government was encouraging Albanian separatists to
start an armed rebellion, but the [Kosovo] Albanians were afraid
    to do so.''

NUNS: DISREGARD FOR PROFESSIONAL MEDIA CODE

Vesna Vujic, acting President of the Independent Association of
Serbian Journalists (NUNS) said on Thursday that the main problem
facing media in Serbia was the disregard for basic professional
    journalisitic standards by state media.

Ms. Vujic added that state media, in particular Radio Television
Serbia, failed to provide accurate, objective and unbiased
information. Ms Vujic added that although NUNS saluted the Serbian
Information Minister's initiative to change the Law on
Information, it was a at present a waste of time to discuss such
    changes.

Chair of NUNS Executive Board Rade Veljanovski stressed that
contrary to the Information Minister's many statements that
Serbian media enjoyed great freedom, the media situation in Serbia
had been catastrophic for over a decade.

WHITE: STRIKE IN 'NIN' A TRAGEDY FOR JOURNALISM

Aidan White, Secretary General of the International Federation of
Journalists (IFJ) sent a letter to Tomislav Dzadzic, General
Manager of the Belgrade weekly 'NIN' on Thursday. Mr. White
reiterated his statement that the NIN strike was a tragedy for
journalism and urged both management and striking journalists to
open a dialogue and resolve their dispute as quickly as possible.

Mr. White added that the decision to replace the weekly's Editor
in Chief, against the wishes of the majority of its journalists,
    was unprecedented.

COHEN CRITICAL OF BOSNIA ELECTION DELAY

On Thursday US Defence Secretary William Cohen strongly criticized
the OSCE decision to postpone for the second time local elections
in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mr. Cohen said that the decision
signalled a failure on the part of those international civil
agencies responsible for the civil implementation of the Dayon
    accords, Reuters and FoNet reported.

Mr. Cohen stressed that this would not change the final withdrawal
date of US troops from Bosnia and that they would leave, as
planned, in June 1998, even if war were to break out again.
