      STUDENTS CONVENE

The newly convened Student Parliament, the institutionalised
successor to Student Protest 96--97, at its first meeting on
Friday, objected to the celebration of Students' Day on April 4.
25 The parliament demanded that Students' Day be moved to the feast
of St Sava, patron saint of schools.

Meanwhile Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Marjanovic received a
delegation from the Student Association of Belgrade, the pro-
government official student organisation. The delegation told Mr
30 Marjanovic that they believed that the Serbian Government was
doing an excellent job in improving conditions for students.

      INFORMATION BILL MARK TWO

Serbian Information Minister Radmila Milentijevic on Friday
presented the second draft of the bill on public information. The
35 minister said the document had been drafted on the basis of
discussion and criticism of the first version.

The major new version drops the provision preventing private
ownership of television stations which broadcast nationally. Also
gone is the requirement for private broadcasters to announce
40 funding sources at the beginning and end of each program. Under
the new version of the law broadcasters will also be able to
change editorial policy without losing their licence.

The new draft of the bill also includes an open government
provision which obliges authorities to allow media companies
45 access to state assessments of their performance and competence.

Minister Milentijevic said that the new draft would be the subject
of further public discussion before being tabled in the Serbian
      Parliament.

The Democratic Party confirmed on Thursday that it would honour
50 the Zajedno agreement giving the Serbian Renewal Movement the
right to nominate the coalition's presidential candidate for this
      year's elections.

Democratic Party spokesman Slobodan Vuksanovic dismissed rumours
of internal disagreements within the coalition.

55 Mr Vuksanovic also confirmed that party leader Zoran Djindjic, who
is currently in the United States, would not attend the Kosovo
Conference in New York next week.

      MAROVIC ACCEPTS US INVITATION

Svetozar Marovic, the Speaker of the Montenegrin Parliament, on
60 Friday accepted an invitation from the US Congress to lead an all-
      party parliamentary delegation to Washington.

      TUDJMAN CLAIMS VUKOVAR

Croatian President Franjo Tudjman on Thursday announced that
Vukovar would soon be reintegrated into Croatia. Mr Tudjman told
65 an election rally in Rijeka: ``Pack your bags, because we'll be
catching a train to Vukovar together within a few weeks.''

Zagreb. The Croatian newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija reported on
70 Friday that locals hurled stones at the bus, injuring several

the remainder having fled before police arrived.
