UNIVERSITY STAFF ASSEMBLY DISCARDS CURRENT CHANCELLOR
The University of Belgrade is undergoing the worst crisis in its
history, according to a meeting of the University's Assembly on
Sunday. The Assembly adopted a decision by the Council of Deans to
replace Dragutin Velickovic as University Chancellor, and to
appoint the oldest dean, Dragan Kuburovic, as acting Chancellor.
The Assembly was attended by almost all deans of the University
and more than 1,000 professors, lecturers and assistants. They
said that the ex-chancellor was mainly responsible for the crisis
the University was in. The Assembly also adopted the University
Charter which seeks freedom from interference by any political
party, and regulates funding. The Charter says that money from the
state budget does not come from the ruling party, but from the tax
payers, and that the University has the right to use all available
private funds, Beta reports.
STUDENTS PROTEST FOR HUNDREDTH TIME
Students of the University of Belgrade on Saturday walked through
the city centre for the hundredth time in a row. In order to mark
their hundredth protest walk, they passed by all places which had
been significant during their three-month protest. On Sunday,
students were ``waiting for the future'' in one of the city's main
squares, Slavija, Beta reports.
DRASKOVIC: WE DO NOT WANT OUR OWN CHANNEL, BUT DE-BLOCKING OF ALL
MEDIA
Opposition leader Vuk Draskovic said that the Zajedno coalition
did not want control over one of the state television channels,
but freedom of all media, according to the principles of
independent and responsible journalism. ``At our rally on March 9,
we will tell people about our demands for the free media. The
multi-party 15 minute programme on Channel 2 of the state
television is really some freedom. They form a choir which
unanimously sings against Zajedno. It is a shameful and
unacceptable act. Slobodan Milosevic accepted the report of
Gonzalez's commission, so he is obliged to establish a free and
responsible press. However, freedom is not the opportunity to spit
at things without consequences. That is the freedom of the jungle,
not of the press. Such so-called freedom does not exist in
democratic countries,'' stated Mr. Draskovic.
``NOVA DEMOKRATIJA'' GREETS AGREEMENT BETWEEN YUGOSLAVIA AND
REPUBLIKA SRPSKA
``Nova Demokratija'' (New Democracy), a member party of the
Serbian governing coalition, on Sunday welcomed the signing of an
agreement on special relations between Yugoslavia and 'Republika
Srpska'. ``We are convinced that this agreement will contribute to
further strengthening and development of the peace process in the
region, '' stated Nova Demokratija, Beta reports.
HUNGARIANS IN VOJVODINA DO NOT WANT TO SECEDE FROM SERBIA
President of the Union of Hungarians of Vojvodina (SVM) and Mayor
of the city of Subotica, Jozef Kasza, gave an interview to the
Novi Sad daily 'Dnevnik' in which he said that Hungarians in
Vojvodina had never wanted to secede from Serbia, but called for
better relations within Serbia and its faster development. Mr.
Kasza also stated that it was a pity that no Serb party of
democratic orientation had got power in Subotica, because SVM
would be its natural ally since it had the same aims: democracy in
Serbia, open media and equality of peoples.
``LE MONDE:'' AGREEMENT OF YUGOSLAVIA AND REPUBLIKA SRPSKA BURIED
SOVEREIGNTY OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
Parisian daily 'Le Monde', in its Sunday issue commented that the
Agreement on special relations between Yugoslavia and Republika
Srpska ``had buried the sovereignty of Bosnia.'' The paper also
said that the Agreement came at the right time for President
Milosevic, because ``he was dismembered by three-month civil
protests, and now he showed he cared for brothers in Bosnia.''
``Functioning of the Bosnian institutions is stalled anyway, due
to discontent in Republika Srpska, and now the sovereignty of
Bosnia and Herzegovina as one country has been completely buried.
The Agreement says that citizens of Yugoslavia and Republika
Srpska can cross the border without visas or taxes, which means
that the government in Sarajevo has no control over its
international borders. Bosnian Croats have now gone even further.
They are preparing to participate as voters in the forthcoming
parliamentary elections in Croatia. All attempts at Bosnian
reunion have failed. Dissolution of that country is happening
before our eyes,'' concluded the paper.
