ALBANIANS DIE IN POLICE SHOOTOUT
Three Albanians were shot and killed and one policeman wounded in
a conflict between civilians and police in Kosovo on Friday. A
statement from the Serbian Ministry of the Interior on Saturday
said the Albanians were suspected of belonging to the terrorist
``Kosovo Liberation Army.''
The pro-Rugova Kosovo Information Centre condemened the incident
as one of the fiercest police attacks on Kosovo Albanians since
1990.
The Kosovo Information Centre also said that ten Albanians had
been detained by police in the last ten days.
CONTACT GROUP: BELGRADE MUST ACCEPT OSCE REPORT
The five-member Contact Group on the former Yugoslavia warned on
Friday that Serbian authorities must implement the recommendations
of the OSCE in full and without delay. The OSCE report confirmed
the victory of the opposition in local elections in a number of
cities in Serbia. American representative of the Contact Group,
John Cornbloom, said that the members of the group are unanimous
in their demand for adoption of the report.
SIXTY-THIRD PROTEST RALLY IN KRAGUJEVAC
Several thousand demonstrators gathered in Kragujevac on Saturday
to express dissatisfaction with the economic blockade of the city
by Serbian authorities. Citizens were also protesting against the
government's continued refusal to relinquish control of local
media.
Local Mayor Veroljub Stefanovic told the crowd that many people
from all over the world had sent messages of support. ``Kragujevac
is the Socialist Party's nightmare. They simply cannot grasp the
fact that they are now the opposition here,'' Mayor Stefanovic
said.
More than a thousand teachers from Kragujevac schools also
protested in the centre of the city on Saturday, demanding payment
of overdue salaries from December and January.
