Putin to mediate in Yugoslav electoral crisis? US President Bill Clinton requested from Russian President Vladimir Putin to mediate in the Yugoslav election crisis. Clinton and Putin spoke on the phone on Saturday night for about 35 minutes and agreed to continue with intensive consultations if Milosevic kept insisting on holding presidential election runoff, White House officials said. "President Clinton stressed that the will of the Serbian citizens had to be respected and President Putin agreed", White House spokesman P.J. Crowley said. Clinton also pointed out that Russia, on account of its historical ties with Serbia, was in the position to play the role of a mediator, said Crowley and added that Slobodan Milosevic refused the offer yesterday that Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov mediate in the resolution of electoral crisis in Yugoslavia.
