Draskovic tenders resignation from party

BELGRADE, Monday -- Serbian Renewal Movement leader Vuk Draskovic told Radio B2-92 today that he will offer his resignation from the party's presidency because of its poor results in yesterday's election.

Congratulating opposition candidate Vojislav Kostunica on his election victory, Draskovic said that he hoped that Slobodan Milosevic would recognise the will of the people and hand over power in a peaceful and civilised manner.

Draskovic said that his party's election results had been far below expectations. "Those results are a consequence of a wrong decision by the party's leadership, including myself, to stand independently in the elections," he said, adding that the party had erred in not staying within the Democratic Opposition of Serbia "in the establishment of which we had played a major role".
