Serb paramilitary shot imam and burned mosque near Gnjilane
On Sunday, gunmen shot and killed a Muslim cleric and burned down a 12th-century mosque near the southeast Kosovo town of Gnjilane, local ethnic Albanians told journalists taken to the area Monday. Two other people injured in the shooting Sunday were taken to a local hospital, they said. A French army spokesman was not immediately able to confirm the incident. Eyewitness accounts gathered by France 2 television said four men, apparently retreating Serb paramilitary, entered the village of Dubrecani, north of Gnjilane, around midday Sunday, set fire to the mosque and killed the imam with a shot in the back as he lay face down on the ground. NATO peacekeeping force said that regular Yugoslav army troops had left the area without incident.
