Vieira de Mello temporary head of civilian mission in Kosovo
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Brazilian diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello to temporarily head of the international civilian mission in Kosovo. Annan said that his choice of Vieira de Mello is on an interim basis until he decides who will be a nominate to take that function of continuing basis. Some of the names believed to be under considerations are former Irish foreign minister Dick Spring as well as Lakhdar Brahimi, former Algerian foreign minister. Both of them have experience in leading UN missions. One of the candidates may also be American, Jacques Klein, who ran the UN military and civilian operation in Croatian region of Eastern Slavonia. Diplomats said that Annan would probably appoint someone from a non-NATO country.
