Fourteen methodologies for baselines and monitoring under consideration
Bonn, 23 April 2003 - The clean development mechanism (CDM) is a key instrument defined in the Kyoto Protocol for promoting global cooperation in addressing climate change and sustainable development. It allows industrialized countries to meet their targets under the Kyoto Protocol by obtaining credits (so-called certified emission reductions) from investments in CDM projects in developing countries.
The amount of credits which a CDM project can earn depends on the methodologies used for setting the baseline and monitoring project performance. Only methodologies which the CDM Executive Board has approved can be utilized. By the first deadline on 15 April 2003, potential participants in CDM projects have proposed a total of 14 methodologies. These are now being expeditiously considered by the panel of technical experts under the purview of the Board and, if found appropriate, recommended to the Board at its next meeting on 7-8 June 2003. If approved, this would set the stage for the first CDM projects to be registered in the third quarter of 2003.
Attention is drawn to the UNFCCC CDM web site (http://unfccc.int/cdm/) which contains the proposed new methodologies and calls for public input on these proposals. Potential project developers and certifying companies (designated operational entities) will also find important documents on the web site, such as the CDM project design document and application forms. They may wish to note that the next deadline for proposing new methodologies is on 29 May 2003. Any specific questions should be directed by email to: cdm-info@unfccc.int.
